Access Protection Summary
Water access is one of the most critical issues facing the industry - as boating grows so will the need for adequate access and support facilities. Access must keep pace in order for the industry to experience meaningful growth. Existing access must be protected and improved wherever possible.
Benefits: Protects water access to enable recreational boating to grow as a pastime and help the industry to prosper. Improved/increased access makes it easier for people to go boating and increases the likelihood that they will remain active in boating.
This program focuses on the four areas that have the greatest impact on water access
- Permitting
- Policy reform
- Land use issues (mixing access and development)
- Compiling data and outreach efforts to impact access issues
BASIS
In partnership with Michigan State University and the Recreational Marine Research Center, Grow Boating is working to develop a national Water Access Index, similar to the Consumer Price Index. The Boating Access Surveillance and Indexing System (BASIS) will finally provide the tools we need to track critical changes in water access.
